Doel vak

Knowledge and understanding – The student has acquired knowledge and
understanding of:
(1) a current topic in international relations from diverse historical,
theoretical, and policy perspectives.

Communication – The student has acquired:
(2) writing skills, policy-related (by means of country position paper
and speeches)
(3) presenting skills (by means of a presentation based on own group
research and presentations related to the Model UN conference and its

Learning skills – The student has acquired:
(4) the skills to cooperate with peers;
(5) interpersonal and professional skills, such as public speaking,
debating, negotiating, and problem solving.

Inhoud vak

This course serves to 1) develop students’ knowledge of international
relations; and 2) assist students in developing practical and academic

During the first part of the course (periods 4 and 5), students are
introduced to a current international issue that serves as the theme of
the course. This will be done through (expert) lectures, debates,
and (group) presentations.

In period 6, students will implement the knowledge and skills they have
developed in a simulation of an international diplomatic
conference (also known as a ‘Model United Nations’ conference).
Throughout this period, students will familiarize themselves with the
functioning of diplomatic conferences and their rules of procedure,
research the position of a country on the topic of the Model UN
conference, write a position paper, and practice public speaking,
negotiation, and debating skills. The course will conclude with students
taking on the role of diplomats, representing different countries at a
2-day simulation of a real-life diplomatic conference, in which they
have to jointly negotiate a resolution.


Seminar format.
During periods 4 and 5, meetings of 2 to 3 hours will take place once
a week, but not every week.
During period 6 the course will become fulltime, with an average of
between 6-8 contact hours per week and a concluding 2-day conference (of
8 contact hours per day).


The assessment of the course is based on:
Written assignments, (group) presentations and class participation.
This course is a practicum, which means that there is no resit
