Doel vak

You will acquire
• in-depth knowledge of Plato’s Politeia and his philosophy in general
• insight into its connections to metaphysics, epistemology, and
• knowledge of the main scholarly debates concerning Plato's Politeia
• basic knowledge of the historical and philosophical context of Plato’s
theories, and their reception from antiquity to today
You will practise
• research skills, such as bibliographical searches, textual analysis,
developing research questions, presenting, writing, and discussion

Inhoud vak

Plato’s Politeia or Republic is arguably one of the most influential
philosophical works of all times, which still elicits numerous scholarly
debates. A good understanding of this work, including both its
historical and its philosophical context, influence, and current
relevance, is therefore crucial for any philosopher. This course is a
research tutorial on Platonic philosophy, starting from the Republic.




Five weekly assignments (50%) and one final essay (50%).

Vereiste voorkennis

This course is only for students admitted to a Humanities or ACASA
research master.


Plato Politeia in a scholarly English translation, preferably Reeve,
where possible also the Greek edition of Slings. Secondary literature to
selected by students as part of the first assignment.
