Ancient and Medieval Philosophy: Mind and Body

Doel vak

The course aims at enabling students to identify the
background of the problem under discussion, to acquire
knowledge of and
insight into a major problem in the history of
philosophy; and to carry
out research in the field.

Inhoud vak

The present course will address the discussions of the relationship

between mind and body as articulated in the writings of
Aristotle, Plotinus, Augustine, Avicenna, and Averroes


Lecture, reading of philosophical texts, discussion


The exam for the present course will include two short assignments
(probably in the second and the fourth week of the course),
 and a final
assignment (a paper of approximately five thousand words) at the end of
course. The mark of the exam will be based upon the results of the
participation in class (15%), of the two assignments 15%, and the final
paper: 70%.
