Modern Philosophy: Mind and Body

Doel vak

The course aims at enabling students to identify the historical
background of current philosophy of mind, to acquire knowledge of and
insight into the mind-body problem in the history of philosophy; and to
carry out research in the field.

Inhoud vak

The present course will address the discussions of the relationship
between mind and body as articulated in the writings of authors from
the Modern period, ranging from the scientific revolution to the
foundation of psychology as a science in the 19th century, from Hobbes
and Descartes to Kant and Brentano.


Lectures and seminars


Essay on the early modern period (50%)
Essay on the late modern period (50%)


A selection of primary texts, which will be specified in the course
manual and distributed through Canvas.
