Doel vak

The aim of the course is to make the students familiar with a number of
Artificial Intelligence techniques (Knowledge and Understanding) and how
they can be applied to the medical field (Applying Knowledge and
Understanding, Making Judgments). Furthermore, students should have the
capability to work in multi-disciplinary teams (AI-students and Health
Sciences students), and to learn from each other different background
and skills (Communication).

Inhoud vak

The course will be structured in three thematic modules. In each of
these modules an AI technique will be introduced, and then applied in
the medical field. Both the AI-technique and a medical topic have to be
studied in a practical, hands on, way.
In a nutshell, we plan to cover the topics:
- medical ontologies (eg. SNOMED, MESH, UMLS, ICD10)
- indicators for medical care (cost and quality of care)
- modelling of clinical guidelines

Beside these three modules there are a couple of guest lectures, for
instance on natural language processing for medical texts, machine
learning for finding predictors of diseases based on patient data.


There will be lectures and practical sessions, plus significant time for
self-study and practical work.
