Doel vak

The main objectives of this course are:
1) To understand the differences between digital AI and embodied AI,
(Knowledge and understanding)
2) To gain insight into open research issues related to embodied AI,
(Knowledge and understanding)
3) To learn the use of simulators to conduct empirical research in this

Inhoud vak

Intelligence needs a body. Or doesn't it? This course is concerned with
embodiment in artificial intelligence. We will elaborate on the
differences between digital AI and embodied AI, discuss the
philosophical as well as the technical aspects, and learn to conduct
experiments with virtual creatures that are embodied in virtual worlds.
Embodied AI concepts will be also positioned and studied in relationship
with Artificial Life, Evolutionary Robotics, and Swarm Robotics.


The course combines literature study and moderated discussions with
experimental work in computer simulations. Students will work in small


The grade will be determined by a weighted average of two sub-grades:
one for an essay about a related subject and one for a technical report
summarising the outcomes of the simulation experiments.


The courses primarily meant for bachelor students in Artificial
Intelligence and Computer Science.

Aanbevolen voorkennis

Students are required to download, install, and use simulation software.
Some coding in Pyhton may be necessary depending on the chosen
