Doel vak

The 6 EC master course Advanced Medical Technology aims to provide the
student knowledge and skills in the field of Tracer Kinetic Modelling.
Starting with the basis of PET-imaging and signal-&-system-analysis the
courses develops to an state-of-the-art discussion of 1) different
tracer-kinetic models and their physiological interpretation, 2)
signal-&-system-analysis based administration (e.g.
bolus infusion & steady state) of radiotracers and radiotracer
concentration measurements, 3) estimation of model parameters using
different least square estimation techniques.

Inhoud vak

This year the course Advanced Medical Technology concerns the topic of
Tracer Kinetic Modelling applied to Analysis of PET studies. To be
short, a PET image visualises the spatial distribution of a
radio-pharmaceutical (or radiotracer i.e., radio-labelled substances)
within the human body. The quantitative analysis of the radiotracer
distribution and its temporal behaviour, using the
TracerKinetic-Modelling approach, enables the interpretation of the PET
studies in terms of physiological processes, such as regional perfusion
of the myocardium and brain, glucose utilisation in tissues and tumors,
and binding of medicines at receptors in the cell membrane. Topics
highly value for clinical diagnostics and, moreover, topics in
state-of-the-art fundamental and clinical research.
Tracer Kinetic Modelling is the field of studying the time course of a
radiotracer and its metabolites in the human body by using quantitative
methods such as: the Positron Emission Tomograph (PET), mathematical
modelling of pharmacokinetics (using differential equations and the
theory of signals & system), estimation of model parameter (using linear
and non-linear least-square techniques) and, finally, the tools
developed for the tracer-kinetic-model-based analysis and the
interpretation and the clinical use of PET-images.


The course consists of lectures and hands-on computer practicals with


Assignments & written examination.
