Dit vak wordt in het Engels aangeboden. Omschrijvingen kunnen daardoor mogelijk alleen in het Engels worden weergegeven.

Doel vak

1. Acquire basic knowledge of ethics.
2. Learn to write a philosophical paper (where you use one of the
theories to resolve a moral dilemma in your own domain).

Inhoud vak

Should governments use big data to improve the low life satisfaction of
certain groups? If we can make super-intelligent systems, what do we
ultimately want them to do (e.g. increase our wealth, security, health,
happiness, etc.)? Is it permissible to use systems (for predicting
criminal behavior, preventing terrorist attacks, diagnosing illnesses,
selecting the best workers, etc.) that are biased against certain
minorities? Why should online platforms censor and restrict content? Why
is it actually impermissible to commit fraud (such as plagiarism)?

In this course, you will learn about the main ethical theories, and
learn to utilize these theories to resolve moral dilemmas (such as those
just mentioned) in a justified and intelligent way. The ethical theories
that we will discuss include: value theory, consequentialism,
deontology, and social contract theory (alongside some game theory).

Multiple-choice exam: 60%
Duo paper: 40%

Textbook (J. Rachels, The Elements of Moral Philosophy), plus texts that
