Doel vak

After this course, the student can

1. translate a (possibly ambiguous) research question from another
research area, or from industry, into a well posed mathematical model or
2. select, learn, and apply appropriate mathematical methods and tools
to analyse this model or solve this problem;
3. interpret the mathematical solutions and translate them into
conclusions or recommendations for the original research question;
4. manage a small applied mathematical research group project;
5. communicate clearly on the outcome of the project, both orally and in

Inhoud vak

This is a workshop of 4 weeks, in which students (in groups of 4 to 6
people) use mathematical tools to model and analyse a problem from
another research area, or from industry. You will thus gain your first
experience in working on open math problems which arise from

What makes things challenging, is that the problems you work on will not
always be formulated unambiguously, and it will also not always be clear
from the start which type of mathematics needs to be used. You will
regularly have to report on your progress, and the project is concluded
with a written report and oral presentation.


You will work on a project that is presented during the first meeting.
Depending on the nature of the problem selected, you may obtain some
tutorials and guided instruction, either in class or in the offices of
the teachers.


You will be assessed by the project coordinator(s) on the basis of the
final report (40%), the presentation (30%) and your group participation

Overige informatie

This is a full time project. If you choose to take part in the workshop,
you cannot simultaneously take part in other courses or projects during
the same 4 weeks.

Presence at the first project meeting is mandatory! If you miss it, you
cannot participate.
