Doel vak

At the end of the course:

1. Knowledge
You are able to describe core concepts in spoken language.
You are also able to describe major (socio)linguistic issues that arise
in situations in which English is used as a Lingua Franca.

2. Skills
You are able to hear and transcribe English speech sounds.

3. Application
Your are able to apply core concepts of spoken language in an analysis
of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). You are able to reflect on the
implications of the emergence of ELF, for example, in language teaching.

4. Attitude
You are able to explain the significance of the study of spoken English
for the use of English as a Lingua Franca.

Inhoud vak

English has become the leading language for international communication.
The ratio of native- versus non-native speakers is currently 1:4, and it
is estimated that around 80% of all communication in English takes place
amongst non-native speakers with different mother tongues. This course
discusses core concepts in spoken language and applies these concepts to
the use of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). The course also addresses
some sociolinguistic issues related to ELF and reflects on pratical
implications of the emergence of ELF, for example, in language teaching.

Onderwijsvorm

Lectures (2 hrs p/w) and seminars (2 hrs p/w).

Toetsvorm

A written exam (50%; individual mark) and a research assignment (50%;
group mark). Both components must be graded at least 5.5.

Carr, P. 2013. English Phonetics and Phonology. Blackwell. Second
edition.
Other literature will be made available.

Doelgroep

First-year students of Communication and Information Studies (CIW) and
Literature and Society, Program English (L&S); International students.

Overige informatie

80% attendance of the seminars and submission of the course work is
conditional for being awarded a grade for the exam and the research
assignment.
