Literature and Globalization

Doel vak

After successfully completing this course, students will:

- be familiar with a variety of literature written by authors who
explore questions of the self, language, and identity in a globalized
- be able to analyze the representation of notions of self, language and
identity in the context of globalization within these literary works;
- be able to present their argument both in class and in written
assignments, supporting their points with evidence from the text;
- be able to engage with secondary literature written from the
perspective of African American Studies and Cultural Studies in their
interpretation of the literary text.

Inhoud vak

Each week we shall look at a different aspect of 'identity' through the
study of a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts. Specifically, this
class will consider how identity shifts and changes in an increasingly
globalized world.


6 hours per week. Attendance in the course seminars is compulsory. If
you are absent at more than 3 seminars (20%), you cannot pass the
course. Exceptions may be made in grave personal circumstances. Make
sure to inform both your lecturer and the student advisor in such cases.


Class participation (10%); written assignments (90%).

Vereiste voorkennis

Students must have taken part in the modules “Literature, Culture, and
Society” and “Literary Theory.”


The texts to be used will be announced in the course syllabus on Canvas
ahead of the course.

Afwijkende intekenprocedure

There is a slightly different enrollment procedure for this module. The standard procedure of the Faculty of Humanities has students sign up for (i) the module, (ii) the form of tuition (lecture and/or preferred seminar group), and (iii) the exam. However, for this module the instructor will assign the students to the seminar groups. Therefore, students should sign up for (i) the module and (iii) the exam, but not for (ii) the seminar groups.
