concrete issues.

Learning objectives

Knowledge and understanding. The student has acquired knowledge and
understanding of:
(1) the development of diversity as a concept and the context(s) in

(3) in a range of contexts: individual, institutional, organizational,
political, and policy-related.

Application. The student has acquired the competences to:
(4) explore social categorization processes and policy interventions,
their possible advantages and disadvantages, and the circumstances in
which they thrive or founder: affirmative action, group
rights/privileges, material support, decentralization/self-regulation;
(5) see and analyse diversity in societal perspective, including in the
framework of equal rights, cooperation, and organizations.

Inhoud vak

Having completed the course Diversity 1, in this second course we will
focus on diversity at work. That is, how diversity is incorporated in a
given society or organization. Implementing diversity can be perceived
as thinking beyond the boundaries of social categories and groups.
Paradoxically, working with diversity often implies first seeing the
differences between social categories and groups, before overcoming them
and start thinking in terms of inclusion.
In this course, we will address this paradox by relating to three
central questions:
(1) What is the current state of diversity and inclusion in a given
society or organization? How are different social categories and groups
(e.g., gender, age, culture) represented? How are (individuals from)
these groups perceived and treated (stereotypes, prejudice,
discrimination)?
(2) Which factors play a role in maintaining the current state of
diversity and inclusion in a given society or organization? We will
distinguish between factors at the intrapersonal (e.g., cognitive),
interpersonal (e.g., language), intra- and intergroup (e.g., power)
level.
(3) What is needed to promote change and/or improve the current state of
diversity in a given society or organization? What are effective
policies and interventions? And which challenges do they bring (e.g.,
resistance)?
Diversity can lead to positive results, but it can also have negative
effects. This course will highlight the challenges of working with
diversity.
