Doel vak

The "Bachelor Project: Business Case" consists of three components:
Study and Career, Scientific Writing in English and the Business Case.

Study and Career (Period 4)
The aim of Study and Career is to orientate on your possible further
study (master's programme) and the job market.

At the end of the course Study and Career the student:
- knows better who he/she is (interests, skills, values, personal style)
related to orientation on further study and job market;
- knows better what he/she wants related to their further study and
profession, such as: what important is in his/her work, what brings
satisfaction in a job, which work environment fits him/her;
- the student has formulated the steps he/she needs to take in order to
be more likely to end up in this desired program and / or desired
profession;
- knows how to use the following tools that will help him/her in his/her
orientation on possible further study and the job market:
o vacancy analysis;
o asking questions;
o SWOT;
o STARR;
o informational interview;
o Inhouse day;
o network: professional and private;
- has written or improved his/her curriculum vitae;
- has written a cover letter;
- has done an informational interview.

Scientific Writing in English (Period 5)
The aim of Scientific Writing in English is to provide students with the
essential linguistic know-how for writing the report of their business
case, specifically the introduction. They will know how to write in
English that is well organized, idiomatically and stylistically
appropriate and grammatically correct.

At the end of the course students
- know how to structure a scientific article, with emphasis on the
introduction
- know what the information elements are in parts of their scientific
article;
- know how to produce clear and well-structured texts on complex
subjects;
- know how to cite sources effectively;
- know how to write well-structured and coherent paragraphs;
- know how to construct effective sentences;
- know what collocations are and how to use them appropriately;
- know how to adopt the right style (formal style, cohesive style,
conciseness,)
- know how to avoid the pitfalls of English grammar;
- know how to use punctuation marks correctly;
- know what their own strengths and weaknesses are in writing;
- know how to give effective peer feedback.

Final texts may contain occasional spelling, grammatical or word choice
errors, but these will not distract from the general effectiveness of
the text.

Business Case (Period 5 and 6)
The aim of the Business Case is to learn to solve a real business case
by applying and combining knowledge and skills. The students learns to
understand the use of the different subjects and skills and improve them
in the context of the business problem.
At the end of the Business Case the student can apply knowledge obtained
throughout the Bachelor to relatively simple business analytics/data
science problems and the student understands the role of scientific
knowledge and social skills in the solution process.

Inhoud vak

To take part in the Business Case, the student should pass Study and
Career sufficient before the start of period 5. In period 5 the student
has to pass Scientific Writing in English sufficient as well to receive
the grade for the Business Case at the end of period 6.

Study and Career (Period 4)
Study and Career consists of individual and group orientation about
further study and job market. We will discuss vacancies, cover letter,
curriculum vitae, Inhouse Days, social networking like LinkedIn,
informational interview, etc. We pay special attention to motivation.
The student will present the outcomes of his/her orientation both orally
and in writing.

Scientific Writing in English (Period 5)
The course will start with a general introduction to scientific writing
in English. Taking a top-down approach, we will then analyse the overall
structure of the introduction. We will then peel back the layers and
discover in more detail how paragraphs are structured, what tools are
available to ensure coherence within and among paragraphs, how to write
effective and grammatically correct sentences and how to choose words
carefully and use them effectively. Only the introduction to the
business case will be written during the course, but we will conclude
with a brief review of the other sections of a scientific article and
the appropriate language for each section.

Topics addressed during the course include the following:
- Structuring a scientific article
- Considering reading strategies: who is your readership? How do they
read your text? What do they expect? How does that affect your writing?
- Writing well-structured and coherent paragraphs
- Composing effective sentences (sophisticated word order, information
distribution).
- Arguing convincingly – avoiding logical fallacies
- Academic tone and style
- Using the passive effectively
- Understanding grammar (tenses, word order, etc.)
- Understanding punctuation
- Referring to sources: summarising, paraphrasing, quoting (how and
when?)
- Avoiding plagiarism
- Vocabulary development: using appropriate vocabulary and collocations

Business Case (Period 5 and 6)
In period five, students get acquainted with a company where typical
Business Analytics problems are to be found. The students are divided
into groups of around five students. Each group receives one of the
available assignments and is fully responsible for its own results. The
solution has mathematical-statistical, computer-technical and more
general business aspects. In addition to the technical side (analysis,
solution) there is also a lot of attention for the written and oral
presentation and project management including a compulsory workshop
‘Project management’. In period 5 the students will work on the
preliminary research for 10 hours a week: the company visit, the mission
formulation, planning, methods, literature, etc. In period 6 the
students will work full time on the project.

Study and Career (Period 4)
Study and Career consists of five sessions spread over eight weeks,
including three lectures of two hours, one company visit (afternoon),
and the final lecture of four hours for the oral presentations. Students
will have to prepare the lectures using the assignments on Canvas.

Scientific Writing in English (Period 5)
Scientific Writing in English is a five-week course and consists of 2.5
contact hours a week. Students are required to spend at least 6 to 8
hours on homework per week. They will work through a series of exercises
that lead to the writing of a complete Introduction. Feedback on the
writing assignments is given in two peer feedback sessions, and by the
teacher at the end of the course.

Business Case (Period 5 and 6)
The Business Case consists of a kick-off in the first week of period 5
and of a workshop ‘Project management’ in the second week. In the second
week also a company visit is planned to learn more about the assignment.
Furthermore, there are two presentation moments planned in period 5 and
two presentation moments in period 6. In the last week of period 6 the
students will present their research, results and recommendations at the
company.

At the same time the students will work independently on their case with
their own group in periods 5 and 6. All along they have weekly meetings
in the presence of the academic supervisor. The student is expected to
spend at least 10 hours a week working on the Business Case in period 5
and full time in period 6.

Toetsvorm

To take part in the Business Case, the student should pass Study and
Career sufficient before the start of period 5. In period 5 the student
has to pass Scientific Writing in English sufficient as well to receive
the grade for the Business Case at the end of period 6.

Study and Career (period 4)
The student has:
- to attend all the classes of Study and Career;
- to hand in all the assignments via Canvas;
- to participate during the meetings;
- to give an oral presentation about the interview.

In case of absence, the student should inform the lecturer in advance.
The student will receive an additional assignment to compensate for this
absence. Furthermore, the student will also make the regular assignment
for the relevant lecture and submit it before the deadline.

Scientific Writing in English (Period 5)
Students will complete Scientific Writing in English when they meet the
following requirements:
- Students hand in one writing assignments (Introduction)
- Students receive a pass mark on the introduction assignment (one resit
possible)
- Students provide elaborate peer feedback on the Introduction
-Students upload all required assignments to Canvas (peer feedback,
final version of the introduction, and other indicated assignments)
- Students attend at least 4 out of 5 sessions, including all peer
feedback sessions. Always inform the lecturer of your absence in
advance. Any missed assignments must still be submitted.
- Students are well prepared for each session (i.e. do all homework
assignments)
- Students participate actively in class
- Students do not plagiarise or self-plagiarise.

Writing assignments:
The introduction submitted for this course should be based on the
business case which the student is currently studying. Other subjects
are not allowed.

Business Case (Period 5 and 6)
The Business Case report, which is also the students’ formal thesis, is
a written report about all relevant aspects of the Business Case,
including the scientific background and the final product for the
corresponding hosting organization. Per group there is a final report
and this report will be assessed by the Business Case supervisor, and
the second reviewer.

Additionally, the individual student assessment will take place:
- throughout the Business Case project during contact times between the
case group and the supervisor (meetings and presentations);
- by means of the peer review forms filled in by fellow group members
both at the end of the preliminary research phase and at the end of the
research phase;
- through a short self-reflection of the contribution of the student and
an individual final interview between the student and the supervisor.

The students are evaluated on the following seven metrics:
- analytics skills;
- synthetic skills;
- creativity;
- developing initiatives;
- social skills;
- presentation skills;
- writing skills.

If the group report is of sufficient quality, but the individual
contribution is insufficient, the student may be given the opportunity
for a resit with respect to the individual contribution. This resit will
be in the form of an additional assignment. There is no resit
opportunity for the other parts of the Business Case, Study and Career,
and Scientific Writing in English.
