Doel vak

After the successful completion of this course, you
• will have attained an overview of the various ways the results of
archaeological research are disseminated;
• have gained insight in the characteristics (possibilities and
limitations) of different media of presenting archaeological information
(academic books, popular books, websites, apps, games);
• have developed an awareness of the different ‘consumer groups’ of
archaeological information (general public; education; local and
national governments etc) and their particular interests and
sensitivities;
• have a basic knowledge of the organizational structure of current
Dutch archaeology;
• have acquired basic knowledge of the basic concepts of archeological
heritage management;
• have a basic understanding of the main ethical issues in archeological
research;
• have acquired an awareness of the ideological and political dimensions
in archaeological research;
• have become aware of the political position of the archaeologist have
acquired the necessary knowledge needed to develop your own critical
attitude towards the profession of archaeology.

Inhoud vak

This course aims to provide the basis for a critical assessment of the
role of archaeology in contemporary society. Archaeological knowledge
about the past is highly subject to manipulation in the present. In this
course we will discuss how archaeological questions and research
strategies are influenced by modern ideological, political and ethical
concerns.
The course revolves around four themes: archaeology and politics (1),
archaeology and its infrastructure (2), landscape and heritage (3) and
public archaeology (4). Each of these four themes will be explored by
several case studies on the basis of which more general discussion will
be held.

Onderwijsvorm

The course will offer two classes each week of three hours, The four
themes will on average take three classes, discussing both
conceptual frames and (inter)national case studies. The theme's have a
returning structure : a historiography of the topic, a case study and
discussion.
For each theme a web class is available.

Toetsvorm

You are asked to write summaries of articles in order to get a routine
in assessing the authors argumentation structure and statements (30%).
The course will end with an examination (70%).

Literatuur

Articles and web classes will be accessible though Canvas. Also, you
will find
instructions to train your academic analytical skills.

Doelgroep

This course is available to 1st year students of archaeology. It can
serve as an elective for students in Ancient Studies and Greek and Latin
language and culture, and students of other disciplines like history,
ACW or planning
