Doel vak

At the end of the course, students have a thorough knowledge of
Babylonian history. They are able to read Neo-Babylonian cuneiform
script, and they can deal with different genres. They know how to
evaluate propagandistic texts versus chronicles and letters as
historical sources.

Inhoud vak

Students will acquire a deep knowledge of Babylonian history of the
first millennium BC by reading a selection of original Babylonian texts
from Akkadian and in cuneiform (e.g., royal inscriptions, chronicles,
letters) and by reading texts in translation as well as secondary
literature.

Onderwijsvorm

Seminar. Regular course attendance is obligatory.

Vereiste voorkennis

A thorough knowledge of Akkadian grammar, vocabulary and signs,
equivalent to the knowledge acquired in the courses Elementary Akkadian
1-3 at the VU. If you acquired this knowledge elsewhere and you are
uncertain about your level of Akkadian, please contact the course
coordinator.

Literatuur

There is no course book. Texts and literature will be announced by the
teacher via Canvas.

Doelgroep

Students in Ancient Studies who specialize in the Ancient Near Eastern
trajectory (with Akkadian language).
