Doel vak

To gain knowledge on the latest research within the field of behavioral
genetics applied to psychology (e.g. cognition, personality, behavior,
psychopathology).

Inhoud vak

Behavior genetics is the field that uses genetic methods to investigate
the causes of individual differences between people. We are all
different: some people enjoy being the center of attention, others do
not; some of us are better at cognitive tasks than others; some people
become addicted to alcohol while others can limit their intake and we
differ in the extent to which we may suffer from depressive symptoms.
Are these differences between individuals caused by genetic differences
and/or by environmental differences? This course will focus on the
influence of genes and the environment and their interplay on individual
differences between people. In addition to presenting the most recent
insights, we also discuss the way we can increase our knowledge about
behaviour genetics using various research methods, including, for
example, animal studies, twin and family studies and genome-wide
association studies.
