This course is a first introduction to the main themes, research methods
and practical applications in the field of cooperation in organizations.
By the end of this course you will have knowledge about people’s
motivations to cooperate within organizational groups and you will be
able to apply this knowledge to promote cooperation in the groups you
function not only as a leader but also as a group member. Furthermore,
you will be able to better understand the advantages and disadvantages
of promoting cooperation in organizations.
Inhoud vakGroups whose members choose to cooperate have innumerable advantages in
terms of functioning efficiently, effectively and successfully. This is
the case for organized groups, like work organizations, but also for
virtually any type of group: communities, study groups, a family... It
is therefore in the best interest of groups to encourage cooperative
behavior. However, members are not always willing to cooperate for
example when cooperating enters in conflict with the member’s (usually
short-term) self- interest. In this course we will study cooperation in
groups with a focus on organizational groups. In this setting, the
concept of Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB) plays a main role.
Why do people choose to cooperate? How to effectively promote
cooperation in organizations? How can people be motivated to engage in
organizational citizenship behaviors? What are the advantages and
disadvantages of these kinds of cooperation? How do the group influences
cooperation among its members? Are some of the questions that the course

Overige informatieStudents should follow both Leadership and Cooperation part 1, and
Leadership and Cooperation part 2. Part I will focus on leadership and
is coordinated by the section Organizational Psychology, part II will
focus on cooperation and that it is organized by the section Social
Psychology. Teaching language is English.
Afwijkende intekenprocedureStudents are required to enroll for the course, the classes, and the first exam option via VUnet. They should enroll for both part 1 as well as for part 2 of this course. You can only enrol for the preminor courses after the information session for the pre-minors in January 2020.
