Doel vak

1. Knowledge of the main theories of in feminist theory and
intersectionality theory;
2. Insight in the way in which these theories are used in the student’s
own discipline;
3. Practicing the skills to critically question texts from the
perspective of gender, race, and sexuality;
4. Practicing the skills to define and defend an argument and
communicate the research conclusions verbally and in writing to an
educated audience of different disciplines in a clear and unambiguous
manner
5. Practicing the skills to perceive a problem from different
disciplinary fields;
6. Practicing your presentation and writing skills.

Inhoud vak

This course introduces into the critical perspectives developed in the
context of feminist and intersectionality theory. The course aims at
developing an intersectional perspective, and will focus upon the
interrelations and divergences between gender, race and sexuality.

The key themes and debates that form the backbone of this minor will be
introduced in the lectures: the sex/gender debate, social
constructivism, sexual difference, performativity, the intersection of
race and gender, and of gender and sexuality, the notion
‘intersectionality’.
The course does not only aim at introducing these debates theoretically,
but at stimulating reflection upon their disciplines by the students. In
weekly assignments the students will relate the problems introduced to
their own discipline.

Onderwijsvorm

The course will take place in September and October 2019 (period 1:
lectures and discussion about texts, three hours, twice a week). The
final course assessment will take place in period 3: students organize a
final Gender and Diversity symposium, and present a poster or paper in
which they demonstrate to be able to analyze a subject/text/film/book in
their own discipline from the angle of gender and intersectionality.

Toetsvorm

- Two short papers of 800-1000 words. The subjects for the papers can be
found in the course manual. (10% for each paper)
- Presentation in class (in total 10%).
- Poster or paper presentation at the final symposium (10 %).
- Final paper of 3000 words (60%).

Literatuur

- In the course we will make use of a book that introduces the main
theories and developments in gender and intersectionality theory. Most
probably:
R. Alsop, A. Fitzsimons, K. Lennon, "Theorizing Gender." Cambridge &
Malden: Polity Press, 2002 or later edition (2003, 2005, 2006, 2012).
- Texts will be read of: Kimberle Crenshaw, Judith Butler, Luce
Irigaray, Donna Haraway, bell hooks, and others. These texts will be
made available through Canvas.
