Mathematics

The program is open to international students and is conducted in English.

In the first year, you will follow a well-structured curriculum alongside all other students, providing a solid foundation for your future studies.

During the second and third years, you will have the opportunity to select courses that align with your personal interests. The program is diverse and customizable; you can choose from a variety of courses while adhering to some general, flexible guidelines that we will outline later.

To assist you in your selections, we have designed seven study paths: Algebra and Geometry, Analysis and Dynamical Systems, Probability and Statistics, Biomedical Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science, and Optimization and Economics. Each study path consists of courses that: (i) share a common theme, (ii) are scheduled without conflicts, and (iii) automatically meet the program requirements. You are not obligated to follow a specific study path; you can fully embrace it or use it as a starting point to tailor your own course selection, as long as it adheres to the general guidelines. You are also welcome to make entirely independent choices, provided they fit within the established constraints.

The first semester of the third year is special, allowing students to concentrate entirely on their favorite topic (this is referred to as a minor). You can choose from courses offered during that period, including those within the seven study paths mentioned earlier. Alternatively, you may opt to complete your minor at a foreign university or pursue a minor within the VU, but outside the Mathematics Department. Another option is to choose an Education minor, which is taught in Dutch; upon completion of the Education minor, you will receive a qualification to teach in Dutch high schools.

The program culminates in a research project, where you will integrate all the knowledge and skills you have acquired throughout your studies.
