Specialization Semimar in Organizational Theory

2018-2019
Dit vak wordt in het Engels aangeboden. Omschrijvingen kunnen daardoor mogelijk alleen in het Engels worden weergegeven.

Doel vak

Upon completion of this course students have the ability to:
• explain some of the main theories in the field of organization and
strategy (e.g., agency theory, transaction cost economics, resource
based view);
• critically reflect on these theories, including their ethical
implications for
practice, based on a good understanding of their strengths and
weaknesses
and comparing them with alternative theories;
• apply the theories discussed in the course to important issues faced
by
firms when organising in practice (e.g., how to structure activities,
how to
compensate employees and managers, whether to outsource activities,
whether to diversify).

Inhoud vak

This course provides an understanding about how to organise productive
activities within and across the firm’s boundaries. To gain and sustain
a
competitive advantage in product markets, firms not only need to select
attractive markets and gain control over resources, but they must also
organise their productive activities in effective ways to maximize value
creation. This requires choices for strategies and organisational
designs
that encourage coordination and cooperation among specialised
individuals and sub-units (groups, departments, strategic business
units,
divisions, etc.). The course covers strategic organisation issues at
different levels, going from the level of the cooperative behaviours of
individual human actors, through the level of the organisation, to the
level of inter-firm relationships.

Onderwijsvorm

Two two-hour sessions per week for 6 weeks that combine lectures with
group discussions and student presentations.

Toetsvorm

The final grade consists of the following elements:
• Examination: open questions (individual grade)
• Team work: assignment, presentation (group grade)
• Individual assignment (individual grade)
