Earth Scientists study the processes and cycles within and between the four spheres, atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and the geosphere by quantifying their magnitudes and rates in space and time. What is the influence of humankind on the Earth System in relation to natural processes? What can fluxes in the carbon cycle in the geological past, and in the present, tell us about the carbon cycle of the future?

Students are trained in fundamental knowledge and skills in the context of addressing the complex problems of our planet in today’s society. The three specializations, Geology and Geochemistry, Earth and Climate, and  Global Environmental Change and Policy offer a variety of courses from Mantle Properties and Landscape Dynamics to Climate Modelling and Environmental Policy.
The first year consists mainly of compulsory courses, practicals and an excursion in one of the two years and is finished with an individual Research Project.
The second year offers a variety of electives focused on advanced and more specialized topics and themes, like Planetary Science, Man and Climate and Geothermal Energy. The year is finished with the Master Thesis, which can include an internship.

Earth Sciences specialisation Global Environmental Change and Policy
Omschrijving
This specialization integrates the disciplinary insights from Earth
Sciences, Environmental Economics and Environmental Policy and
Governance to arrive at interdisciplinary solutions to the complex
sustainability problems of tomorrow. In this interdisciplinary
specialization, you will learn how to design solutions to the complex
sustainability problems faced by our planet. From a strong grounding in
Earth Sciences, we explore integrated approaches towards solving global
sustainability challenges by adding the insights of environmental
economics and environmental policy studies. Examples of main themes
addressed in the programme are:

• Climate change processes, societal impacts of climate change, and
policy solutions;
• Transition to renewable energy and a low carbon economy;
• Land use change and options for limiting ecosystem degradation and
biodiversity losses;
• Sustainable management of water resources and flood risk.

The first year lays the groundwork in the three disciplines and methods
of interdisciplinary research, including fieldwork. From a strong
grounding in Earth Sciences, we explore integrated approaches towards
solving global sustainability challenges by adding the insights of
environmental economics and environmental policy studies. Climate change
is a central and cross-cutting theme throughout this specialization. In
the second students deepen their studies in three distinct streams:
energy, ecosystems and biodiversity, and water.

geochemistry of the Earth. In doing so it integrates tectonics,
petrology, geochemistry, sedimentary geology, and planetary science. The
student acquires a broad background by following a set of compulsory
courses in Year 1 before focusing on a research topic in one or more of
the aforementioned fields.

The specialisation Geology and Geochemistry focuses on the geology and
geochemistry of the Earth. In doing so it integrates tectonics,
petrology, geochemistry, sedimentary geology, and planetary science. The
student has acquired a broad background by following a set of compulsory
courses in Year 1 and will focus in Year 2 on a set of optional courses,
finishing the Research Project started in Year 1, and the Master Thesis

Earth Sciences specialisation Education
Omschrijving
The two-year master programme Education (E) basically consists of one
year of further education and specialisation in Earth Sciences and one
year of specific teacher training. It is recommended not to try to take
both earth scientific and E-courses within one course year, as programme
schedules may not be compatible. E-courses are shared with master
students from other faculties. The E-programme (60 credits) is taught in
Dutch.

The programme of Earth Sciences (minimum of 60 credits) should at least
contain an Earth Sciences Research Project (450267, 24 credits) or
450295, 450296, 450200 (27 credits) and Sociale geografie II (450099, 6
credits). The remainder of the programme (total 21 or 24 EC) is to be
filled with courses which can be chosen from the various master's degree
programmes of the Graduate School Earth, Environment and Ecology.

The educational programme is taught in Dutch by the ‘teacher training
programme’ (Faculty of Psychology and Education) and consists of 60
credits of compulsory modules (see below). More

Omschrijving
The two-year master programme Science Communication (C-variant) consists
of one year of further education and specialisation in Earth Sciences
and one year of specific communication training. It is recommended not
to try to take both earth scientific and C-courses within one year, as
programme schedules are not compatible. C-courses are shared with master
students from other faculties. The C-programme (60 credits) is taught in
English and Dutch.

The programme of Earth Sciences (minimum of 60 credits) should at least
contain an Earth Sciences Research Project (450267 (24 credits) or
450295, 450296, 450200 (27 credits)). All other course modules (total 33
or 37 credits) are considered elective options and can be chosen from
the various master's degree programmes of the Graduate School Earth,
Environment and Ecology.

The compulsory programme consists of the following two communication
course modules, the courses Research Methods for Complex Problems
and Science & Communication (12 credits in total) and an ninternship (30
credits).
Students should take 18 credits from optional course modules.
