Genes in Behaviour and Health (research)

2026-2027

We are the only RM program in Europe that combines human quantitative genetics + molecular genetics in psychology. The programme is taught by internationally recognized experts in behavioural, molecular, and statistical genetics, biological psychology, and methodology. The interdisciplinary approach enables a broader understanding of the causes of individual differences in human complex traits.

Our programme is organized by the Department of Biological Psychology and is closely connected with the Netherlands Twin Register (NTR, www.tweelingenregister.vu.nl). The NTR has become one of the largest twin registers in the world, with features such as the inclusion of parents, siblings, and spouses, the combination of longitudinal surveys, and multiple phenotypes and biological data available, such as DNA and brain imaging.

The programme focuses on the fascinating interplay of genes and environment in human behaviour and health. Students are taught how to conduct state-of-the-art analyses, and learn about how the knowledge of genes, the environment, and other -omics layers may help prevent and treat diseases. Students will engage with questions such as: "Should we take genetic factors into account in the treatment of disorders such as depression or ADHD?", "Why are some people happier than others?", "What experiences help people learn faster?", "What role do genes and the environment play in brain functioning?", "Can we develop personalized prevention and intervention strategies?", "Who is most at risk for alcohol addiction?", "Which children are most at risk of struggling in school?", "How does psychosocial stress influence gene expression?", and "What is the role of genes in healthy aging?".
