Doel vak

The primary learning objective of the course is to strengthen the
academic background of medical students in order to improve their
knowledge- and skill-base related to research in the discipline of
obstetrics and gynaecology.
Upon successful completion of the module, students can:
• critically appraise scientific literature and research designs
(specifically with regard to topics in obstetrics and gynecology)
• give a scientific (poster) presentation and write scientifically (e.g.
CAT, pros and cons debate, consultation chart)

Inhoud vak

Obstetrics and gynecology is the medical specialty dealing with a
woman’s health in the different phases of her adult life: fertile life,
pregnancy, childbirth and menopause. It is a broad discipline, involving
numerous clinical fields, such as surgery, oncology, cardiovascular
disease, endocrinology, transgender medicine, neonatology, radiology,
genetics and medical ethics.
The module “Sex, Reproduction and Innovation” is divided in 3
sub-courses (lasting 4 weeks each) and will give provide not only a
deepening of the knowledge obtained in the major, but also a broadening.
It comprises current research topics in obstetrics and gynecology and
gives some insight in the enormous versatility of the specialty. Each
week will start with students acquiring the general knowledge and
understanding required concerning the topic of the week, followed by
scientific research relevant to the topic and finally the consequences
of these trials for daily practice.

Course 1: Big trials and big consequences
In the first course, we will address various big trials with a
significant impact on the general practice of the gynecologist.
In each week of this module, the latest developments in a specific field
related to obstetrics and gynecology are represented. Trials addressing
the young pregnancy (ectopic pregnancy, recurrent miscarriage), uterine
abnormalities (myomas and adenomyosis) and cesarean section (“niches”)
are discussed. Foundational knowledge underpinning these topics is
presented to the students in a lecture format to provide a basis for
understanding the discussed trials and give insight into their relevance
for daily practice. Students will also experience real-life scenario
training regarding gynecological medical emergencies on the labor ward
of the VUmc.
Practical
Students have the opportunity to attend meetings involving patient care
and surgery. They will also learn how to critically review research
papers with conflicting results on the same topic–making use of the
study scoring form and the SAM model–and also assess the validity of
published research in mainstream media like newspapers. Furthermore, the
mechanisms by which (some) operative techniques are introduced will be
scrutinized.
Course 2: Big innovations and big chance
The second module will focus on new developments in fertility and
significant changes in human lives, such as gender dysphoria and the end
of fertile life (menopause). Specific congenital uterine abnormalities
and recent treatments in this area (such as uterine transplantation) are
lectured, as well as new techniques to treat common problems such as the
menopause. Finally, a full week will be devoted to the concept of gender
dysphoria. Again, each week of this module is structured by way of
lectures to deliver the foundational knowledge and understanding
concerning the addressed topic, ongoing research related to the topic
and finally the consequences for daily practice.
Practical
Students will learn how to perform a critical appraisal on a topic of
choice. They will attend meetings involving patient care and visit the
IVF laboratory. Additionally, students will visit the Frolik Museum in
the AMC, and also have the opportunity to work with the 3D anatomical
embryology atlas available at the AMC, which is the only one of its
kind.
Course 3: Big four and big data
In the third and final module, the focus will be on research involving
the significant risks during pregnancy and labor for mother and child
and the consequences these may have in later life. Significant issues
like maternal mortality and morbidity, fetal neurological sequelae and
preterm birth are discussed. New diagnostic genetic techniques, parental
decision making in pregnancy and the influences of these techniques in
later life will be debated. A relatively new research concept in
medicine, “big data,” will additionally be addressed. Understanding the
research field of big data and its value in obstetrics and gynecology is
discussed by means of various large obstetric databases.
Practical
Students will learn how to write a consultation chart. A visit to the
genetic laboratory is also organized, and students will participate in
moral discussions concerning the risks and opportunities afforded by new
genetic techniques. Finally, a real-life scenario training around
neonatal life support at the labor ward of the VUmc is scheduled.

Each sub-course will be assessed by a wide variety of exams and
assignments,
such as the writing of a consultation chart, presentation of a critical
appraisal of topic (CAT), writing a scientific summary (pros and cons)
of conflicting literature on a gynaecological topic, read scientific
literature assignments and written exams (open ended questions/MC). The
final mark is based on the final exam and the assignments. Both
assessments are equally weighted. PhD students will chair the study
groups and coach and supervise the medical students during the
fulfillment of their assignments. More details will be given at the
start of the module.

Afwijkende intekenprocedure

Before the start of the semester students will be invited to indicate their preferred minor track, however the Institute of Education and Training (IET) will make a final selection based on both student preferences and availability in the different tracks. Once you have been selected for a track, the administration of IET will make sure you’re registered for all educational activities such as study groups, courses and exams. Important: Please mind that in case you won’t pass the exam you’ll not be automatically registered for a re-examination. In order to sign up for a re-sit, you’ll need to apply in time (which is two weeks before the re-examination)for the exam through the form Re-take exam Bachelor of Medicine.
