Experimental Cell Biology I

2019-2020
Dit vak wordt in het Engels aangeboden. Omschrijvingen kunnen daardoor mogelijk alleen in het Engels worden weergegeven.

Doel vak

The student has insight into and understanding of biological processes
fundamental in living cells.
The student has an overview of techniques used in Cell Biology and
understands their working principle.
The student can work with scientific literature and is able to
summarize/discuss information from various literature sources.

Inhoud vak

We start with a brief repetition of basic Cell Biology and then go ahead
with in-depth discussion of modern Cell Biology, current and emerging
topics, and experimental techniques.
The focus of this course is less on he memorization, but more on the
understanding of biological processes and of experimental approaches in
Cell Biology.
Topics:
• General cell organization and function, protein, DNA and RNA
function, cell cycle and (programmed) cell death
• Transcription factors, gene expression, and epigenetics
• Protein modification, sorting, and membrane transport
• Receptors and signal transduction
• Basic techniques in Cell Biology.
• Current models organisms in Cell Biology
• Visualization techniques in Cell Biology
Students will also work on a literature assignment (in groups).

Onderwijsvorm

Lectures (26h), work discussions related to the literature assignment
(6h), self-study in groups to repeat lecture material and for literature
assignment.

Toetsvorm

Written exam (2/3), literature assignment (1/3). Next to a minimum
combined grade of 6.0 for whole course a minimum grade of 5.0 is
required for the written exam and for the literature assignment.

Literatuur

No book mandatory. Useful books are:
Alberts et al. Molecular Biology of the Cell (more extensive,
recommended for Biomolecular track) or
Alberts et al. Essential Cell Biology (more concise, recommended for
Neurobiology track).
We will also work with scientific literature. Examples: Molina et al.
Nat Med. 2018, Bald et al. Mbio 2017, Viheervara et al.J. Cell Sci.
2014.
