Experimental Cell Biology II

Dit vak wordt in het Engels aangeboden. Omschrijvingen kunnen daardoor mogelijk alleen in het Engels worden weergegeven.

Doel vak

The student has an overview of advanced techniques in Cell Biology and
understands their working principle. The student is acquainted with
current open questions and on-going developments in Cell Biology.
The student can use the gained knowledge in Cell Biology for analysis
of experiments/experimental results, for the design of experiments to
address open questions, and for writing of a research proposal.
The student is able to argue scientifically using correct terminology.

Inhoud vak

In-depth discussion of modern Cell Biology, with a particular focus on
current and emerging experimental techniques. Researchers in the field
present current state-of-the-art topics in Cell Biology.

Lecture topics include:
• Advanced -omic approaches, such as genomics,
proteomics, metabolomics and interactomics
• (Confocal) Microscopy and Live Cell Imaging, Protein (GFP) labeling
visualization techniques
• Proteomics and mass spectrometry
• Systems Biology
• Knock-out and RNAi techniques
• Cell biology of the synapse

The student will work out and submit a research proposal on a chosen
topic in Cell Biology (group work).

Lectures (28 h), work discussions related to the research proposal (6h)
self-study in groups to repeat lecture material and for research

Written exam (2/3), research proposal (1/3). Next to a minimum combined
grade of 6.0 for whole course a minimum grade of 5.0 is required for the
written exam and for the literature assignment.

Vereiste voorkennis

This course is to be taken together with the accompanying course
Experimental cell Biology I.

No book mandatory. Useful books are:
Alberts et al. Molecular Biology of the Cell (more extensive,
recommended for Biomolecular track)
Alberts et al. Essential Cell Biology (more concise, recommended for
Neurobiology track).
For the research proposal you will also work with scientific literature
relevant for the chosen topic (search/discuss in small groups).
