Minor Networks in Business and Economics

2019-2020
Deze opleiding wordt aangeboden in het Engels. Sommige van de omschrijvingen zijn daarom mogelijk alleen in het Engels beschikbaar.

Modern societies, and therewith their economies, are to an increasing extent shaped and characterized by their network structures. This is reflected in the increasing importance of the internet, social media, social networks, trade and transport, transport and logistics, formal and informal knowledge networks, etc. A thorough understanding of the functioning and economics of networks is therefore of paramount importance for new generations of academics. Given the multifaceted nature of networks and the questions surrounding their functioning, a broad multidisciplinary perspective on networks would be highly desirable. This minor offers and integrates perspectives from Economics, Business, and Operations Research. The aim is to offer a minor that is not only attractive for students in SBE’s own bachelor programmes, but also for students from other faculties and universities, both national and international. We address both virtual and physical networks, and offer perspectives ranging from formal analytical network modelling and empirical methods to qualitative analysis, and from business perspectives to mathematical techniques and economic models of strategic interactions and market failures, thus providing students with a rich toolbox and a broad understanding of the field.

The minor consists of 5 courses and a colloquium. In period 1, the course Fundamentals of Network Analysis is offered in three variants, depending on the student's background.  Aslo, there will be a colloquium which consists of a series of bi-weekly lunch seminars by research staff from the different participating groups. It exposes the students to recent developments in the research of the teaching staff and their groups.
