Course Objective
In this course, students will learn to apply specific digital methods and techniques at an advanced level to all aspects of current archaeological practice, from research design to data collection and analysis to presentation and sharing of research outcomes.
After finishing this course, students will
- Have acquired advanced knowledge of a number of relevant digital methods and techniques, such as GIS, database management, remote sensing, 3D modelling, programming and/or statistics;
- Be able to independently apply these methods to tackle archaeological and heritage-oriented research questions;
- Be able to produce a high-quality report of the applied workflow and analysis results obtained, and to publish the resulting data and analyses in a reproducible manner.
Course Content
In this course, you will engage with archaeological and heritage-oriented research problems from a digital perspective. Based on actual case studies as scenarios, you will apply digital approaches to gather, analyse, visualize and interpret research data, with the ultimate goal of reflectively assessing the value of these methods for archaeological practice. For this, you will specialize in one or more techniques of your choice (e.g., GIS and database management, or 3D modelling and programming). The case studies stem from current research carried out in ACASA projects.
The course will consist of the following learning activities:
- Lectures – short lectures will be given to introduce specific topics; guest lecturers will be invited to speak about the research projects, and about specific digital tools; some of these lectures will be combined with online resources (blended learning).
- Practicals – during the practicals, you will have the opportunity to work with specific tools and techniques under supervision, and to discuss technical and methodological topics with the teachers.
- Presentation – the final results of the projects will be presented in class; researchers involved in the ACASA projects will be invited to participate in the discussion.
