Course Objective
In the course Academic Skills Researchtalent students will learn how to write and present a scientific research proposal while taking academic, commercial and European research proposals into account. During the course, the students will practise the structure of the proposal, the research design and method, the planning and the budget. Not only will the students receive a media training, follow a workshop public speaking, but also will they exercise how to translate research results for non-scientific audiences. In addition, the students will practise how to present a research proposal to an audience or scientific committee.
Course Content
In the first session, our students will practise the so-called Elevator Pitch. They will receive information about the procedure and assessment of NWO (Dutch Research Council) subsidy proposals and about the importance of valorisation. As a first assignment the students will write an abstract of (an) existing research (proposal). As a second assignment the students will write a press release. As a final assignment the students will write a scientific research proposal on the basis of their thesis project. This proposal has to be written according to the NWO Rubicon application form. Each student writes a peer review for another student. During the last session of the course each student will present his/her research proposal.
Additional Information Teaching Methods
There are weekly sessions of 90 minutes. Students actively participate in these meetings. Halfway the course students get the opportunity to receive peer-reviews on their concept research proposal (those students commit themselves to peer-review two concept research proposals themselves). The discussion meetings in which these reviews will be discussed take place online on Canvas (Conferences or Zoom).
